First post on the blog -
Fighter Rankings. Why is this important? Rankings are used for fighters to get
a data-driven sense of their standings against other fighters at major
tournaments. IBJJF now has a seeding system going into tournaments and rankings
will increasingly play an important role in tournament brackets and thus
outcomes. Looking only at the data also removes any bias or favoritism towards
an individual team or athlete, as well as identifies hidden gems not at the
forefront of the media. Fighter rankings are heavily weighted for their
performance at major IBJJF tournaments and does not include other tournament
venues.
Methodology
Fighter Rankings are defined
as rankings based on tournament results, i.e. receiving a gold, silver, or
bronze medal at an IBJJF tournament. I used the IBJJF
Ranking system and collected results
for each major tournament going back three years. Results will be posted twice
a year, directly after the Gi World Championships and again after the No Gi
World Championships.
The weighting system is based on the IBJJF criteria for the Standing Value, Weight of the Season, and Weight of the Championship.
Standing Value:
Weight division: 1st = 9
points, 2nd = 3 points, and 3rd = 1 point. Open division: 1st = 13.5 points, 2nd
= 4.5 points, and 3rd = 1.5 points.
Weight of the Season:
Season 2016/2017 = x1 point,
Season 2017/2018 = x2 points, and Season 2018/2019 = x3 points. *Note: The IBJJF
season ends after the Gi World Championships. Points are collected from the 2018/2019 season and will be updated for the 2019/2020 season after the No
Gi World Championships.
Weight of the
Championship:
What's included: the World Championships = x7 points, Euros, Pans = x4
points, Asians, Brazilian Nationals = x3 points, American Nationals, BJJ Pros, Pan Pacific, and
South American tournaments = x2 points. What's not included: IBJJF
Opens and other nationals were not included, namely the regional tournaments with a
championship weight of x1. Why exclude these tournaments? Accumulating points
at many regionals doesn't always reflect the level of difficulty at the major
tournaments. A fighter can have the most overall ranking points by competing at
all the regional opens (sometimes uncontested), but not place at a major tournament. Another player can
only show up to the world championships and win. To compensate for this
discrepancy, this ranking system excludes the regional opens.
